What [cars] would you buy if you sold your kidney?

I was joking around with a friend after finding a black BMW 1M on Carmax today and mentioned that I wouldn't mind selling my kidney for it. The 1M is $57,998 and looks to be in mint condition (with only 8k miles, and Carmax rounds up). But that brought up a good question.

How much is a kidney worth?

Well, the short answer is "it depends." Kidney's are worth much more here than they are in, lets say, India but can be worth even more in other parts of the world. According to a pretty sketchy website I found (because of course I googled it), in the U.S. a kidney on the black market can go for around $262,000. Now, I'm sure if someone was super desperate they might give you a few extra bucks, but for sake of argument lets say whoever is buying your kidney is only desperate enough to buy one off of the black market, but not enough to give you more than $262,000.

So, you find a buyer and a sketchy doctor with a morphine addiction in a back alleyway. The doctor removes your kidney and puts it on ice, you don't die, and you make the trade. You now have $262,000 and a pain in your side.

What would you buy?

Just for the hell of it, lets keep it mostly to cars.

Personally, I would go this route:

BMW 1M (non Dinan) - $60k

Deus Ex Machina Moto-Grigio - $15,000+ (estimate)

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S - $160,000-ish

I have an unhealthy obsession with these. My girlfriend's mom has one and she lets me drive it all the time. It's amazing, and cruises at 120mph like most cars cruise at 60*

Plus, I already have my old fun car! Whatever was left would go into making it faster, prettier, and less broken.

So, what would you blow your kidney money on?

My standard answer to these questions: A bunch of 240Zs, about $100,000 of mods for one of them, a CJ-5 Jeep with a V8, and a luxury-restomod (new suspension, seats, engine, brakes, rest of it stays the same though) of a Jaguar XJ series III.

1970 chevelle ss with a 454 and a 4 speesd. Think a nice driver is around 100k

Jaguar XF diesel as a daily. 50-60k I think.

A nice harley, not sure which model yet, around 15k

Keep my Panda with a few minor upgrades 5k

An old volvo wagon as a workhorse 5k

An ariel atom for track day bro 40k

Definitely good choices. My grandfather owns a mint 240z. I've been trying to convince him to hire me as an indentured servant so I can have it. Unfortunately, he's not going for it. He also used to have an XJR. That thing was absolutely ridiculous.

I was thinking 2002 Turbo or Carrera RS, but if I'm going to make the bad decision of selling an organ I might as well go all out on the bad-decision meter. I can't remember who said this the other day, but I would aim for "rejecting Hitler from your art school" on a scale of zero-to-invading Russia in the winter.

I've driven in an XJR owned by a friend (2000-2002 I think) and I've never seen a car that meshes "high performance" with "comfortable and luxurious" more perfectly.

The main criticism I read were:

*The brakes don't hold up well on the track (despite the 1M being lighter than the M3 and the brakes being pulled from the M3, weird...)

*The car understeers way too much

I didn't push it as hard as I would have liked to, but I got to have a little bit of fun with it on some great back roads. I honestly didn't notice any understeer but that doesn't mean its not something to look out for. It was my friend from high school's dad's car and I didn't want to obliterate the possibility of him letting me drive it again. The breaks also felt awesome, but I wasn't on a track so that doesn't mean much.

Number-wise (keeping exchange rates out of this), used car prices in the UK seem so "low". 10,000 for a relatively new Range Rover? 5,500 for an S2K? It sounds amazing. Reminds me of the TG Africa special where they got amazing condition wagons/estates for prices that sounded so low. What was it, 1,500 pounds?

I wish he kept it. He got rid of it and picked up two Porsche 911s. One C4s and one Cs that he built he motor in. I don't really know why he thought two was necessary, considering he already had a 914-6 and a few other wildly unpractical cars. Eventually he sold the Cs and picked up a CTS wagon. Now he complains that its not fast enough.

Should've gotten the CTS-V, grandpa. Or just kept the XJR...

Yup £1500 for an 850R, but you know there's a catch.

Owning a car in the UK is really expensive, be it tax, insurance or fuel, cars will find a way to bleed your wallet dry.

Still like Top Gear said you can own a V12 Uber Coupe for £6500. Tempting isn't it.

I'm less cautious with my uncle's cars, but he also lets me drive them on my own. I don't have my friend's nervous parent burning a hole in the side of my head when I take a corner "enthusiastically." I've actually gotten my uncle's F430 sideways (on a skid pad) and done some seriously idiotic speeds in that car... But regarding the speeding, in my defense, I was following him and had to keep up.

That is a personal record I don't think I even want to break.

Ahaha. Yeah, my dad would strike me from the will if I scratched his 930 Turbo, but my uncle doesn't care. He really drives the crap out of his Carrera RS and its seen some track time so it's far from perfect. He is of the mindset that cars are useless if they aren't being used. It also doesn't hurt that he afford to replace them if he needed to. The only car he's super OCD over is his Ferrari 365 GTC because he was selling it to get, in his words, "something stupid." Last I heard he wanted a Ford GT, but I don't know if he found a buyer for the GTC yet.

Oooh. I love the 612. Your dad is a man of taste. I usually like grays and blacks, but sometimes a dark blue or green, or even a maroon looks really good. Older cars can kind of rock any color at all. I love the blue of my 2002, but it would probably look terrible on any modern car.

The F430 is actually a midnight blue color with red interior. It certainly looks black in that picture though.

I would stay conservative, I'll take a Focus ST and put some money into stage 2 or 3. and buy a Yamaha Crossplane R1, and a WR450 and convert it to a Supermoto. Then save the rest.

Haha thanks. I convinced him to buy the F430 and then the 612 so my taste rubbed off on him :) He was going to get a Panamera GTS but I showed him how the used 612 cost the same and he went for it.

I love blue Ferraris. I wish one of my dad's cars was blue. That is funny how the classic cars can be pretty much any color!

Oh wow crazy the car in the pic is dark blue. It totally looks black in that pic!
